Promised Land was released along with Elvis Sings The Wonderful World Of Christmas, both in the 7" classic album series in December 2011 along with a new book, A Moment In Time : 4 Days in ‘56, this one is something special, from author and producer Michael Rose [Elvis: Return to Tupelo DVD], a most stunning glimpse of Elvis' life in 1956. Through literally hundreds of photos : many previously unpublished : we get to join Elvis at his show in Detroit on May 25. We stay with the tour for two more days in Columbus and Dayton and finally arrive in Memphis on May 28.
In 1973, Elvis Presley booked sessions at Memphis' famous Stax Studios, where Booker T. & the MGs, Otis Redding, and numerous other soul stars had recorded hits. Unfortunately, initial efforts to have Elvis Presley work with the Stax stable of musicians yielded few usable tracks, and Elvis soon called in his stage band to finish the sessions. The results can be heard on the albums Good Times, Raised On Rock, and Promised Land. Like most of Elvis' 70s recordings, Promised Land is an eclectic mix reflecting Elvis Presley's many musical enthusiasms. The ten songs that make up this album run the gamut from country heartbreak songs ('There's a Honky Tonk Angel', 'Mr. Songman') to carnal white funk ('If You Talk in Your Sleep') to heartfelt gospel ('Help Me') to schmaltzy pop ('Love Song of the Year', 'It's Midnight'). While the performances on Promised Land are uniformly excellent, the material is a mixed bag of strong material and throwaways.
The Promised Land album is indeed a classic but by including the alternate album and 'the making of' – it's now widescreen ... To sum up, Elvis took us on a trip to the promised land that's one hell of a ride – Kudos to the FTD team for releasing the ultimate edition of a classic album.
... Promised Land is without a doubt one of the best releases from the Follow That Dream label this year. It's one that I will return to many times, together with Good Times and Raised On Rock, the other two classic albums making up what could be called 'The Stax Trilogy'... Highly recommended.
... For all of these reasons, and many more which I could spend all day talking about: Promised Land is now my all-time favorite Elvis album. It has taken almost 35 years to get here, but it was well worth the wait! ...
